How to Get from Heathrow Airport to London: Underground, Elizabeth Line and Express

Heathrow is connected to London by the Piccadilly Line, Elizabeth Line, Heathrow Express and coaches. The right choice depends on your terminal, final destination, luggage, budget and whether you prefer the simplest route or the fastest rail option.

Heathrow transport options

Option Useful when Important check
Piccadilly Line You want the budget-friendly Underground route to central London Allow a longer journey and check the terminal station
Elizabeth Line You want a modern rail connection to Paddington, central London, the City or east London Check whether the train serves your terminal and final station
Heathrow Express You are travelling between Heathrow and Paddington and prioritise speed Compare the ticket price and onward journey from Paddington
Coach or taxi Your group has substantial luggage or your destination is outside the rail network Allow for traffic and book only through official channels

Piccadilly Line or Elizabeth Line?

The Piccadilly Line reaches all Heathrow terminals and connects with central destinations such as King’s Cross St Pancras and Leicester Square. The Elizabeth Line is useful for Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street, Canary Wharf and Stratford. Compare the final destination, number of changes and luggage handling rather than choosing only by airport name.

Terminal and ticket checks

Heathrow has separate rail and Underground stations for different terminal groups. Confirm your terminal before boarding and allow time to walk from arrivals. Contactless and Oyster may be available on TfL services, but fares and products can differ for airport journeys. Use the TfL fare finder and Heathrow’s official transport pages before travel.

Accessibility and luggage

If you need step-free access, check the complete route rather than only the airport station. Keep larger bags clear of aisles and doors and avoid the busiest periods when possible. Heathrow’s official guidance includes station and terminal information for rail travel.
